Exploring Decoloniality and Roots: Collaborative Art at Jan van Eyck Academy

Last June I was an artist in residence at Fashionclash in Maastricht. For a week we talked about (De)coloniality and roots, while working with our hands on a cloth made by the Linen Project. For months after the talks resonated in my head and in my work.

Today at 15:00 at the Jan van Eyck Art academy in Maastricht, the participants of the residency along with Crafts Council Nederland Tailors and Wearers and RCD Fashion will talk again about decoliniality and roots.

Soundscapes on roots will accompany the cloth we worked on. The cloth was first in Maastricht, traveled to Spain, Rotterdam and Amsterdam where people enriched the cloth with different techniques and stories .

I worked on the cloth in my studio  with some of my friend artists: Aizuri by Hiske ter Veld, Doodkonijn, Amanda and Charlotte. And we added the ancient technique of Batik to the cloth.

So today at 15:00 you can tune in with this link, online or in person.

The Story Behind Our New Matte Gold Zip-Up: A Blend of Family, Nature, and Slow Fashion

Our latest design is deeply personal—rooted in family history and inspired by nature. I recently discovered that my grandparents, who lived in Sumatra, were passionate about mushrooms too and named their venture “Djamoer Barat” after one found near their fields. This connection inspired me to create a print that reflects not only their love for mushrooms but also my own journey with Studio Catta.

The black zip-up jacket features a matte gold mushroom design, with a hidden cat at its center—adding a playful touch. Each piece is handcrafted in our Amsterdam atelier, following the principles of slow fashion and sustainability. The jacket closes with a golden zipper, combining elegance with everyday wear.

At Studio Catta, every design tells a story, blending craftsmanship with mindful production. This zip-up is more than a fashion piece—it’s a symbol of heritage, creativity, and sustainable style

Sustainable Upcycled Dress | Unique Fashion from Studio Catta

At Studio Catta, we are passionate about sustainable upcycling. This dress has become a beloved Studio Catta upcycled classic, crafted in the historic heart of Amsterdam. The upcycling process is a true embodiment of slow fashion, requiring time and care to select the perfect piece to repurpose. Each dress is one-of-a-kind, as the men’s shirt component is always unique.

This dress, made from a blend of upcycled men’s shirts and new materials, has quickly become a studio staple. Since each fabric and size I come across is different, there’s always an element of surprise in what’s available. However, I strive to keep a few in stock at all times. Every single dress is unique, yet the familiar silhouette returns in different colors with each iteration. In addition to reusing pre-loved items, the dress is further shaped by moulage, making it easy to wear with a classic twist.

Studio Catta Closed for floor renovation. Open again 27th of August 2024

We’re excited to share that Studio Catta, which has been a cornerstone of creativity in Amsterdam for 18 years, is undergoing a brief but necessary renovation. Nestled in a historic building, our studio’s charm requires regular upkeep to maintain its unique atmosphere.

On the 23rd and 24th of August, we’ll be closing the studio to apply fresh layers of paint to our floors, allowing a few days for them to dry fully. While we understand this might be a slight inconvenience, it’s all part of our commitment to providing you with a vibrant, welcoming space.

Mark your calendars—we’ll be reopening on August 27th at 12:00 PM, and we can’t wait to see you then!
