Slowfashion Amsterdam | Timeless Sustainable Fashion at Studio Catta

🌿 Slowfashion Amsterdam 🌿

At our boutique atelier in the historic heart of Amsterdam, we define sustainable fashion by creating classics.

Slowfashion means embracing timeless, well-crafted designs that stand the test of time.

In the fast-paced world of fastfashion, new collections flood in every season, leading to massive waste as unsold items are quickly discarded to make room for the next batch.

At Studio Catta, we reject this cycle. We don’t follow seasonal trends. Instead, we create, wear, test, and refine our designs until they become classic favorites that elevate your style year after year.

Take our classic A-line skirt, for example. It’s been a staple in our collection for over a decade. While the fabrics may change, the original pattern, developed using the moulage technique, remains the same. This technique allows us to envision and perfect the design in 3D before transforming it into a 2D pattern, ensuring a perfect fit and flow. Our A-line skirt is beloved by many, with some customers owning multiple versions because of how beautifully it moves with their body. And the best part? This skirt is ALWAYS available in our studio.

Embracing Slow Fashion: Where Stories and Styles Meet

Embracing Slow Fashion: Where Stories and Styles Meet

Slow fashion, for me, is all about the connections between the maker and the customer. In my studio, conversations are a cherished daily occurrence. We delve into the origins of fabrics, the craftsmanship behind each garment, and the essence of sustainable fashion. And quite often, we talk about cats. The cat prints scattered throughout my studio spark joy among cat-loving customers, leading to delightful exchanges of photos and stories about our beloved pets.

Recently, a raven print has joined the collection, bringing with it a wave of captivating stories about this fascinating bird. These moments remind me that clothing does more than cover our skin—it sparks conversations and connections.

In the end, slow fashion is about more than just clothes. It’s about taking the time to share and celebrate the stories behind them, making each piece truly special.

Decolonial Fashion Residency

Last week, I had the honor of spending time with a remarkable and inspiring group of individuals at the Decolonial Fashion Residency, organized by Fashionclash in Maastricht. This topic is very close to my heart and my slow fashion studio in Amsterdam.

We had two inspiring speakers: Sandra Niessen from the research collective Decoloniality and Fashion, and Zinzi de Brouwer from Studio Palha.

The week was filled with personal stories, backgrounds, and thoughtful discussions. We also worked hands-on with a special piece of cloth from the Linen Project.

Now back home, we are still processing the experiences from those days. The story continues as the cloth travels with the different makers who participated.

The impact on my work and others’ will reveal itself in time.

The Exhibit that no one got to see

The exhibit no one got to see:

In 2020 these works were exhibited in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. Due to covid & lockdowns no one got to visit the group exhibition.

It did mark the beginning of upcycled pieces in Studio Catta’s collection.

Music is made by David Labeij also during covid.

A Future with the Fragments of Yesterday 2020

Clothing might be the symbol of our drive for fleeting satisfaction in our desire for something new. The clothing industry is extremely impersonal. The maker and the hours he or she has put into making an item are completely invisible when the consumer buys a piece of clothing. Additionally, the price is so low that consumers have started to see clothing as a disposable product.

The disposable nature of clothing results in an enormous pile of discarded items. And this pile grows with every second.

More and more is being produced, but there are fewer and fewer raw materials. The damage to the environment and people is becoming increasingly visible. And consumers are slowly becoming aware of this.

During the lockdown, many consumers experienced a pause in the constant desire for something new. Pajama pants and a pilled sweater work just fine on Zoom. Spending a lot of time at home was a reason for cleaning out closets. But also for ordering and returning clothing online. And the pile grows.

This pile deserves a different future than the bonfire or landfill.

For this work, I collected discarded clothing. One round of asking immediately yielded bags full of clothes.

With these fragments of the past, I created new items, suitable for both myself and my daughter. In the images, the past, present, and future come together. A future with the fragments of yesterday.
