A One-of-a-Kind Creation: My Batik Tulis Dress

I was recently gifted a stunning piece of fabric by my aunt, and it turned out to be something truly special—a Batik Tulis. This intricate, hand-crafted art form involves using a canting tool and wax to create patterns on fabric. Its waxy texture and beautiful irregularities are hallmarks of the traditional Indonesian technique, which is as challenging as it is mesmerizing.

Having tried it myself a few times, I can attest to the skill required. Every line drawn with the canting is permanent, and even the tiniest wax droplet can alter the design. Once the pattern is complete, the fabric is dyed, and then the wax is meticulously removed—a labor-intensive process that reveals the final masterpiece, with each line retaining the original fabric color.

This particular Batik Tulis piece bears the artist’s signature: FA.H.Bilal. Inspired by its uniqueness, I transformed it into a dress, keeping the signature visible as a tribute to the creator. Since I had only this single piece of fabric, the dress is a one-of-a-kind creation meant just for me—it won’t be available online or in the Studio.

Although this piece isn’t available, I love sharing what Studio Catta Amsterdam Slowfashion creates in our boutique atelier. Each design we craft is rooted in artistry, tradition, and sustainability.

If you’d like to catch a glimpse of this dress, I’ll be wearing it tomorrow during my visit to Felix Meritis, Cerita Kita.

Thanks to Sabine Bolk for the additional info.
